Money Glee Monday #20 - How to overcome financial stresss

If you do not stress about your finances this article will not be for you. At the same time unfortunately we'll not be able to wave a magic wand and get rid of your money concerns. Before finding out some tactics on how to overcome your financial stress learn about some of the reasons for financial stress.

How to overcome financial stress

  • Acknowledge that you have stress in the first place. Without acknowledging that there is stress or a challenge in any part of your life, you're unlikely to improve on it. Get clear on how it is affecting your life, what the consequence of doing nothing is & what you want your life to look like. We generally react to pain or pleasure, which one will you decide to act upon?
  • Get your numbers together. Similar to the first point, if you aren't aware where your numbers are i.e. what you currently spend, currently owe etc you will not be able to improve upon what you currently do not know. This does not mean you need to have complicated spreadsheets put in place, if you'd like to know more about your numbers let us know!
  • Put a plan in place - Where do you want to be in 3 or 6 months, 5 or 10 years? Sure life will get in the way and the plan or your life situation is likely to change however time will pass anyway. Get really specific on your thoughts. A specific question if you're in debt is; how much do you want to pay off the debt in the next 6 months? Then work backwards on how much this will cost you each week to reach this plan
  • Know that there is light at the end of the tunnel - After you've put the financial plan in place and understand what you need to do, get out of your own way and figure out how to make it happen. Will you work an extra shift on a Saturday or cut back on that extra take-away meal you buy each week?

Unfortunately as we mentioned before there are no magic tricks however a big part of relieving that financial stress is taking action and control of where you currently are then starting to learn more about how you get to where you want to be.
